Chinese whispers
Wednesday, 28 January 2009, 2:39:36 PM
Chinese whispers
of the electronic age
pass swiftly
in cyberspace
reshaped and retold
to fit personal agendas
whispers erupt
into angry shouts
passed from
broomstick to broomstick
as the witch hunt begins
original message forgotten
the tumbril rolls
through the backblogs
of bigpond
that kangaroo court
of misunderstanding
while the hungry torch burns
what matters the truth
when manners are foresaken
and opinions collide
with uneven force
against the voice of one
preciousness personified
The original whisper remains
as a testament
to the outsider who wrote it
impervious to curses
that ignite the flames
and the mob screams
Burn, witch, burn!

Djerriwarrh Festival
the parade passes by
coloured costumes and marching bands
muffled
beneath a mutinous sky
raindrops falling
in artistic drip-glaze
on paper flowers
the sun winks
in conspiracy
searing edges of dark clouds
to light the tail
of the very last float
in vivid fire engine red

The Old LGH
The LGH sits
in inglorious abandonment
now, in its older age
grey curves peel back the years
to hint at the beauty of its youth
a deco princess
an icon to the health of the city
tattered curtains whisper
behind cracked windows
of empty sunrooms
no recuperation here
no peace for lost souls
trapped in the slow decay
the aged lady waits
as politicians and developers
argue the toss
the silent killer,
asbestos,
escapes from cracks and fissures
to dance in toxic freedom
down the valley
onto the citizens below
class action waits
in predatory stillness
as fibres take rest in healthy lungs
and the now-deposed icon
extracts a lethal revenge

Keeping the challenge
Friday, 15 August 2008, 3:57:06 PM
I have managed to meet this personal challenge, begun on 11 July, to write and post one short form poem a day but, as I will be away from my computer until 24 August, the best solution seemed to be to post in advance.
I will also use this post for a last minute plug for the Tasmanian Living Writer's Week events I will be in attendance at:
Glenbothy Winery, Relbia, 1.00 Sunday 17 August for book readings by me, Loretta McCarthy, Jacqueline Lonsdale Cuerton & Frank Madill with music and nibbles in between.
And..
The launch of my new collection of poetry, Discourse with Walls, written in March when I was Writer in Residence at the Gorge Cottage under the Launceston City Council's ASrtist in Residence Program. The launch will be at the book fair on saturday 23 August at 11 am, upstairs Stories Bookstore, Cimitere St, Launceston.

Leonard Cohen returns to Montreux stage

MONTREUX, Switzerland (AP) - Leonard Cohen returned to the Montreux Jazz Festival on Tuesday for his first concert here in 23 years.
Cohen, who played favorite old songs "Suzanne" and the much-covered "Hallelujah," as well as the lesser-known "The Future," is on his first major tour since 1994. Earlier this year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Madonna and John Mellencamp.
The 73-year-old songwriter is among the highlights of the two-week music extravaganza held every year on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Four-time Grammy winner Erykah Badu opened the event on Friday.
Joan Baez, k.d. lang and last year's Montreux discovery Sophie Hunger played an all-female night on Sunday, while Herbie Hancock, Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan and Angelique Kidjo will perform at a 75th birthday celebration for music impresario Quincy Jones on July 14.
Alicia Keys, Pete Doherty's band Babyshambles, Lenny Kravitz and Paul Simon will also be playing at Montreux.
The event, which is in its 42nd year, also features a host of free concerts including performances by jazz emsembles from the universities of Kansas, Minnesota and South Alabama.
Organizers say they expect 220,000 people to visit the festival, which ends July 19.

Who owns blog comments?
Wednesday, 18 June 2008, 1:44:07 PM
I have had to re-post this due to a nasty little blog hog, calling him/herself the blog bandit, who sent over 400 mms to the previous post. Apologies to those who made genuine comments on the topic.
The original post read:
I was asked recently who owned the copyright on poems placed on my blog and I responded that copyright remained with the writer. I still uphold this view, however, I have since read the following and wondered what other people's opinion on this was.
