At the clearance sale
bargain hunters sifted
through the residue
of his mother's life
much later
he thought of the dignity
of a post funeral pyre.

This one is my favorite of your wonderful work.
ReplyDeleteI remember at a yard sale, years ago, sifting through a man's mother's craft supplies.
"Here, take this too," he kept saying. I still have her button tins and spools of thread and her hot glue gun is the best.
Great poem.
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment,Loll. I really appreciate it. I think about what might happen to my 'stuff' when the time comes - my poor children.

This is very poignant Merlene. It reminded me of when my husband's mother died and we put her hand-embroidered tablecloths into a charity table top sale. I couldn't bear to negotiate with would-be purchasers and withdrew them in the end. We have them still!
