Angel's Trumpet - a Villanelle

Angels' Trumpets - 1st draft

From my window I can see the Angel's Trumpet in my neighbour's yard.

Angel’s trumpets rest by day
Benign against the red brick wall
Dreaming of past bacchanalia

While Madonna lilies stoop to pray
O’er petals lost to blustery squall
Angel’s trumpets rest by day

Blossoms in the breeze do sway
Lost in deep narcotic thrall
Dreaming of past bacchanalia

These slippered ladies hide away
Until the early nightfall
Angel’s trumpets rest by day

Decked out in nature’s negligee
Worn beneath a fluted shawl
Dreaming of past bacchanalia

Reluctantly I turn away
And close my mind to the sirens’ call
Angel’s trumpets rest by day
Dreaming of past bacchanalia

2nd draft

Angel’s trumpets rest by day
Benign against the red brick wall
Dreaming of past bacchanalia

While Madonna lilies stoop to pray
O’er petals lost to blustery squall
Angel’s trumpets rest by day

Blossoms in the breeze do sway
Lost in deep narcotic thrall
Dreaming of past bacchanalia

These slippered ladies hide away
Until the early nightfall
Angel’s trumpets rest by day

Decked out in nature’s negligee
Worn beneath a fluted shawl
Dreaming of past bacchanalia

Reluctantly I turn away
And close my mind to the sirens’ perfumed call
Angel’s trumpets rest by day
Dreaming of past bacchanalia
