Day 26 Author Blog Challenge

What would be the ideal NON-bookstore venue for selling your book? Why? What is your plan to reach out to such a venue to ask about having them carry your book?
The ideal non-bookstore venue for selling my books would vary from book to book. Family history books I've written would do well at Visitor Information Centres and local Historical Societies because of the local history content on people and place they contain.

The best way to reach such markets would be through a letter of introduction with a book promotion flyer or one sheet included. If a larger market was anticipated it could be beneficial to send a free copy of the book for display and ordering purposes.

Book fairs are also another useful outlet, sort of like a pop up café for books, where you pay for the site and sell your books direct to attendees – many of whom are local writers and poets who don’t always have a lot of money to spend on other people’s books. I know when I attend any book fair I decide ahead of time how many books I’ll purchase and how much I’ll spend on these. Otherwise I fall into the ‘buying from the heart’ trap, where I buy a book from someone who hasn’t made many, or any, sales just to encourage them.

Whatever the venue or genre of book, designing a flier is always part of my marketing plan and I send these out with a cover letter to any person or organisation I think it is relevant to.

  1. At the meetup last Saturday, we all learned by proxy that having your one-sheet on you at all times is a very good idea. You never know who you're going to meet in passing that might just have the exact right location to sell your book! So yes, designing the one-sheet and having it on hand with a stack of business cards is a must!
